Q:

Why do people like you say that we need to have Jesus' help in order to deal with our problems? I've had a lot of problems from time to time, but eventually I solved them, and I didn't need God to do it.

A:

Did it ever occur to you that God may have been helping you deal with your problems—even if you weren’t aware of it? After all, He gave you your abilities, and He also can give us wisdom on occasion to deal with our problems.

But can you honestly say that your life right now is perfect? More than that, can you honestly say that your life measures up to what God wants it to be? No matter how hard we try, we still have habits and motives that are wrong, and we can’t conquer them in our own strength. As the Apostle Paul said about his own struggles, “What I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7:15).

Most of all, we can never conquer by ourselves the greatest problem any of us will ever face—which is death. Right now, you may think you have a good life—but someday it will come to an end and you will face God. Only if you know Christ and His forgiveness will you be ready for that day.

Pride is one of the most dangerous and deadly of all sins, for it makes us think we don’t need Christ. But we do, both for this life and the next. My prayer is that you will honestly face your spiritual need of Christ and ask Him to come into your life. He alone can give you the joy and peace you seek. Jesus’ promise is for you: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
