Q:

What makes us different from the animals? My new science teacher says we really aren't any different, except that we have some mental abilities that other animals don't have. I don't think he believes in God, but I haven't asked him.

On the surface you might be tempted to think your science teacher is right. After all, we have bodies just like other creatures do, and physically we share much in common with some of them. The Bible says God formed us “from the dust of the ground and breathed into (our) nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2:7).

But one thing sets us apart from the animals: God has given us a soul or spirit. You don’t have just a body and a mind; you also have a soul – and that is what separates you from every other creature on this earth. What is your soul? Your soul is that part of you which can know God and enter into a personal relationship with Him. It’s that part of you which enables you to lift up your heart to Him and thank Him for His goodness and kindness. It’s that part of you which can come to God in prayer.

This is why we’re unique, and why human life has dignity and importance. It’s also why we value human life, and must do all we can to preserve it. We aren’t just animals – so we shouldn’t act like animals! The Bible says that God made man “a little lower than the angels, and… crowned him with glory and honour” (Psalm 8:5, KJV).

God may or may not be real to your teacher – but is He real to you? At the beginning of this new school year open your heart and life to Jesus and make it your goal to live for Him every day.
