Q:
Since God supposedly knows everything, does this mean He also knows our inner thoughts? Can He look inside our minds and know what we're thinking? I find that kind of scary, because I'm not sure I want God to know some of the things that go through my mind.
A:
Yes, God does know everything, including our innermost thoughts and motives, even those we try to hide from everyone else. The Bible says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).
This is a sobering truth, because it reminds us that no matter who we are or what we’re doing, we cannot hide from God. We think we can, of course; how often have you done something you knew wasn’t right, but you thought you could get by with it because no one was looking, including God? But God knows all about us, even the dark corners of our hearts and minds. The Psalmist declared, “The Lord knows all human plans” (Psalm 94:11).
But the Bible tells us an even greater truth: In spite of this, God still loves us! If we actually knew what some people were really thinking about us, we probably wouldn’t want anything to do with them. But God isn’t like this. He loves us in spite of our sin, and He yearns to forgive us, cleanse us and purify our hearts and minds.
How do I know this? I know it because God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to take away our sins through His death on the cross. Don’t carry your burden of sin and guilt any longer, but turn to Christ and give yourself to Him.
