Q:
We have really gotten ourselves in a hole because we took out one of those sub prime mortgages a couple of years ago to buy our house, and now we can't make the payments. It sounded like a good deal at the time, but we didn't read the fine print. Will God help us get out of this somehow?
A:
From what I’ve read, thousands of families are facing the same situation you are. Hopefully, others will learn from these headlines about the dangers of taking on too much debt–but I know that doesn’t help you now.
God is concerned about everything that concerns us, no matter what it is, because He loves us and wants what’s best for us. We can bring everything to Him in prayer, and ask Him to give us wisdom when we face problems that seem insurmountable. The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).
At the same time, I wish I could promise that God will somehow take this problem away for you–but I can’t. Sometimes we have to bear the consequences of our own shortsightedness or unwise decisions. But what I can promise is this: God is with you, and He wants to help you deal with this situation wisely. The Bible says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God … and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).
Talk with your mortgage holder; you may be able to work out a better payment schedule. Seek advice from others you trust also. Most of all, let this be a time when you and your family draw closer to Christ and find new strength in Him.
