Q:

What does God look like? My sister tried to draw a picture of God once, but my parents said they weren't sure if she got it right. She made Him look kind of like the sun. I am 9 years old.

A:

God isn’t like anything we will ever see around us, because He doesn’t have a physical body or a physical nature. Instead, God is a spiritual being, and He is everywhere. (This is one reason why the Bible commands us not to make idols.) Jesus said, “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

Does this mean we can’t know anything about God, since we can’t see Him? No, not at all. God made us, and He loves us and wants us to know what He is like. One way we can do this is by looking at the world He’s made, and when we do, we’ll realize that He is powerful, wise and glorious. The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).

But God did something even greater than this: He became a man! That man was Jesus Christ, who was God in human flesh. This is why I hope you’ll ask Jesus to come into your life, because God loves you and wants to be your friend every day. By a simple prayer of faith you can invite Jesus into your heart today, and I pray you will.

Your sister wasn’t completely wrong; God truly is glorious. But He also is our Heavenly Father, who made us and wants us to be with Him forever in heaven. And once we are with Christ, “we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).
