Q:
I've always tried to be a good person and care about others, but now my friend is telling me that's not enough to get me into Heaven. This has me concerned. What else does God expect me to do?
A:
Let me ask you a question: How good do you think you have to be in order for God to let you into Heaven? Do you have to be good 50 percent of the time? Or 60 percent? Or even 99 percent?
The answer may shock you—but the Bible says we’d have to be good one hundred percent of the time! You see, God is absolutely holy and pure, and even one sin—just one—would be enough to keep you out of Heaven. As the Bible says, “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing” (Habakkuk 1:13).
But God loves us, and He doesn’t want us to be separated from Him through all eternity. This is why He has provided another way for us to be saved—not by our good works, but by Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. He came into the world to become the final sacrifice for our sins, and when He died on the cross, all our sins and our guilt were transferred to Him. He took upon Himself the judgment we deserve!
Don’t trust in yourself and your good works any longer. Instead, put your trust completely in Jesus Christ for your salvation, and by a simple prayer of faith ask Him to come into your life. God’s promise is true: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Do you have eternal security?
