Q:
I'm not religious or part of any organized religious group (and neither were my parents), but I've always been curious about Jesus. Why was He different from any other religious teacher who has ever lived?
A:
I’m thankful you are curious about Jesus, and I hope you won’t allow your curiosity to fade but will do all you can to satisfy it. And I can think of no better time to do this than at Christmas, when we celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ into the world.
In one way Jesus was just like anyone else who has ever been born—because He was fully human. Like us, He got tired and hungry and felt pain; He also would die. But the Bible tells us He also was totally different from anyone else who ever lived—because He also was fully God. God came down from Heaven and entered this sin-scarred planet in the person of Jesus Christ! The Bible says, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18).
How do we know this is true? One reason is because of the difference Christ makes as we open our lives to His love and transforming power. But we know it especially because Jesus did something no one has ever done: He rose from the dead, by the power of God. His resurrection is the final proof of His divine nature.
I urge you this Christmas to seek Jesus, just as the shepherds and wise men did that first Christmas. When you do, you’ll not only discover who He is, but that God loves you and will make you His child forever as you invite Jesus to come into your life.
Seek Jesus, while He may still be found.
