Q:
I'm shocked because a cousin of mine says he's decided to get involved in Satan worship. I don't know if he's serious or just trying to shock us, but why would anyone want to follow the devil? Can anything good come from that?
A:
No, nothing good can come from following Satan or honoring him in any way. Even if your cousin isn’t serious or is only flaunting his rebellion, he’s dealing with something that is spiritually dangerous.
Why is this? One reason is because the devil is opposed to everything good. He isn’t just an imaginary being that someone dreamed up, nor is he a cute character like you see in cartoons, with a red suit and a pitchfork. Satan is a very powerful and evil spiritual being, and he is engaged in a massive cosmic battle against God. The Bible says, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but … against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
Another reason why the Bible tells us not to have anything to do with Satan is because he is a liar, and he’ll deceive us at every opportunity. It began when he deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and it continues to this day. Jesus said, “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
Pray for your cousin, that he won’t be satisfied with anything less than a living, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Then ask God to give you an opportunity not only to warn him, but to tell him of Christ’s love for him.
