Q:
I went to a friend's funeral the other day, and the pastor said that at the end of time God will put our bodies back together (if I understood him correctly). How is that possible? I've always assumed our souls live on after we die, but I've never heard anyone say anything beyond that.
A:
One of the Bible’s greatest truths is that the grave is not the end for those who know Christ, because someday our bodies will be raised up and transformed into the likeness of Christ’s body after His resurrection. The Bible says, “Just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven (Christ)” (1 Corinthians 15:49).
In that day, our souls and our bodies will be reunited. The Bible calls this “a mystery” (1 Corinthians 15:51), and there is much about it we won’t fully understand until we get to heaven. But the Bible tells us all we need to know, and God is able to bring it about. In that day, our bodies will be perfect and imperishable; pain and death will no longer have any hold over us, and the limitations we now experience will be gone.
All of this is possible because of Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. You see, the Bible says we are separated from God because of our sins, and we have no hope of heaven or eternal life. But God loves us, and He sent His Son into the world to make our salvation possible through His death and resurrection.
Do you have the assurance in your heart that if you were to die tonight you would go to be with God in heaven? You can, by turning to Christ in repentance and faith, and trusting Him alone for your salvation. Open your heart to Him today.
