God does call some people to become pastors, evangelists, Bible teachers, or missionaries, and I believe churches should encourage people (especially youth) to see if He is calling them to some kind of full-time ministry.

But it’s a mistake to think God can only use us if we’re working in a church or other ministry! God can use you right where you are — and He will, if you ask Him to. All around you are people who are hurting, and who need to know that God loves them and can help them. Many of them have nothing to do with a church, but you know them, and God can use you to help them and show them His love and point them to Christ.

No one had a greater impact for Christ than the Apostle Paul. But Paul didn’t just preach and teach; he also worked with his hands as a tentmaker. Not only did he win the respect of others by earning his own living, but he also had an influence on other tentmakers (see Acts 18:1-4). Let his words be your guide: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12).

Do others see Christ in your life? Make sure of your commitment to Him, and then ask God to show you ways He can use you — at work, in your church or community, or even in distant places.
