Q:

I no longer believe the way I was brought up to believe by my parents. I'm in college now and it's time for me to choose my own path, although I know you probably don't agree.

A:

You may be surprised to learn that I do agree with you on one point: You can’t depend only on your parents’ faith to see you through life. We each must make our own decision whether to accept or reject Christ for ourselves; our faith must be our own, not that of someone else.

And that’s the real question you must face: What will you do with Jesus? Don’t reject Him just because your parents believe in Him and have tried to follow Him (however imperfectly); that would be a decision based on emotion, not reason. Instead, face honestly what the Bible says about Him — that He was God in human flesh, who came from heaven to forgive us and transform our lives. Jesus made the most startling claim imaginable — and it’s one I challenge you to investigate for yourself: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).

Is Christ’s claim true? Millions of people across the centuries have said yes — and their lives have been transformed as a result. But the most compelling reason to accept His claim is because He did something no other human has ever done: He died and then came back to life by the power of God. The Bible says He “was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4).

Right now, you’re probably delighting in your new-found freedom. But don’t let it take you down the wrong path. Instead, face honestly who Jesus Christ is, and open your heart and life to Him.
