Q:
I guess I'm kind of a "church hopper" because I'm always changing churches and never seem to find one that satisfies me. Why can't I find the right church?
A:
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself exactly what makes you dissatisfied with the churches you attend? Are the people less friendly than you had hoped, or is the music not to your liking? Or do you feel that the preaching or the church’s programs don’t meet your needs?
Whatever the reason, try to discover why each church seems to fall short—and then ask yourself if your criticism is really valid. After all, no church is perfect (and as someone has said, if we ever find a perfect church it will stop being perfect the moment we join it!). In other words, don’t expect too much of any church; if you do, you will always be disappointed.
What should you look for in a church? First, it should be a place where you can grow spiritually, because the Bible is being preached and taught. Don’t go to church just to be entertained or meet new people. Go because you know you need to grow closer to Christ, and one way this happens is through our fellowship with other believers. The Bible says, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:2).
Then seek a church where you can become involved in its work. God doesn’t only want you to receive; He also wants you to give, by serving others. Become involved in your church’s life, and you will not only help it overcome some of its shortcomings, but you’ll also help others grow closer to Christ, even as you do.
