Q:

Like a lot of people, I grew up in the church but left it all behind me when I left home and started my own life. Now, I wish I had a church to help me sort out my life (I've just been through a bad divorce), but I'm afraid I'll feel like an outsider. Can you understand my fear of being rejected?

A:

Yes, I can understand your fear—and in a far deeper way, so can God. After all, Jesus knew what it was to be rejected and misunderstood; the Bible says, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering” (Isaiah 53:3).

But the most important thing I can tell you is that God not only understands your feelings but He also loves you, and He will never reject you. He knows the pain and heartache you’ve been going through, and He wants to bring comfort and healing to your soul. No matter what your life has been like, He is able to forgive the past and give you hope for the future. God’s promise is for you: “For I know the plans I have for you … plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

How can this happen? Begin by coming to Christ by faith, confessing your sins to Him and asking Him to come into your life. Christ loves you so much that He was willing to die for you, and unlike human love, His love for you will never change or fail.

Then ask God to guide you to a church where Christ is at the center, and people are seeking to follow Him. You won’t feel like an outsider for long, because God’s people will surround you with His love and strength.
