Q:
Neither my husband nor I grew up in religious families. But we're curious about religion, and when a couple came to our door offering to explain their religion to us, we enjoyed talking with them. But how can we know if they're right? We don't want to get sucked into a cult.
A:
I’m thankful you are cautious and do not want to be led astray or deceived by a cult—which can easily happen. Cults often target people who have little religious knowledge or background, since their beliefs are not in accord with the Christian faith at crucial points. This is the case with the group these people represent.
Your letter suggests to me, however, that although you come from a non-religious background, you and your husband are not satisfied with this. In fact, I sense that you both have within you a hunger for God, or at least a desire to know if He is real and can make a difference in your lives.
Don’t suppress that hunger or ignore that desire! God put it within you—because He wants you to come to know Him in a deeply personal way. Jesus’ promise is for you: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).
How can you find God? First, ask God to guide you, telling Him honestly that you don’t even know if He exists—but if He does, you want to know Him and commit your lives to Him. Then read about Jesus in one of the Gospels in the Bible (I suggest John). Finally, ask God to lead you to a church where you can learn about Jesus and begin walking with Him every day.
Are you secure in a relationship with Christ?
