Q:
Do you think people will ever learn to get along with each other so that wars and conflicts will eventually cease? Shouldn't we do more to try to get people to respect each other and live in peace?
A:
Yes, we certainly should do all we can to encourage peace, especially in light of the dangers our world faces. The Bible tells us to pray for peace, and it also commands us to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you” (Jeremiah 29:7).
But the Bible does not promise that we will ever have complete peace on this earth—not until Christ comes again to establish His perfect kingdom of righteousness and justice. In fact, the Bible even indicates that as Christ’s coming draws near, we will see even worse conflicts. Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. … Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” (Matthew 24:6).
Why does peace escape us? Why has the last century been the bloodiest in the history of the human race, in spite of all our advances in science and education? The reason is within ourselves—within our own hearts and minds. The Bible says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (James 4:1).
Our greatest need is to have our hearts changed—and that is something only God can do. And He will, as we submit our lives to Jesus Christ. Have you made your peace with God by turning your life over to Christ? Make your commitment to Him today.
