Although such events are rare, I am convinced that God occasionally does give a glimpse of heaven to some of His people.

In fact, my own mother had a similar experience shortly before God called her home to heaven. Perhaps God wanted to reassure her; perhaps He was reminding us of heaven’s reality—but whatever the reason, heaven was very real to my mother, and I’m sure she looked forward to going there even more once she glimpsed its glory. The Apostle Paul wrote that on one occasion he “was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell” (2 Corinthians 12:4).

At the same time, we aren’t to look for such things, nor do we need to—because if we know Christ, we know that heaven is our final destination. We weren’t meant for this world alone; we were meant for heaven—and Christ has opened the way for us through His death and resurrection. Like God’s people of old, we are “looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10).
