Q:
After my uncle's death last year, my aunt became very interested in things like contacting the spirits of people who've Chr(34)passed overChr(34) (as she calls it). She's firmly convinced that some day she'll be able to contact my uncle. Is this possible?
A:
Most of this kind of activity, I’m convinced, is based on trickery or fraud, and simply takes advantage of grief-stricken people who deeply miss their loved ones and yearn to have contact with them.
But something like this can also bring a person into contact with hostile occult forces that are not from God, and are in fact opposed to God. It may not appear like this at first; in fact, they may seem to be gentle and harmless. But this shouldn’t surprise us; the Bible reminds us that at times “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). In reality, however, they will deceive us into believing things that aren’t true, and they seek to draw us away from God.
This is why the Bible repeatedly warns us not to get involved in any attempt to contact the dead, or to become involved with the world of demonic spirits. The Bible warns, “Let no one be found among you… who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). These are solemn words, and God wants us to take them seriously.
Instead, urge your aunt to turn to Jesus Christ and find her comfort and peace in Him. He alone conquered death, and He alone assures us of life beyond the grave. When we know Him, we have hope – hope for this life, and hope for the life to come.
