Q:
A friend of mine says that when we commit our lives to God and obey Him, then we become divine and are little gods (if I understand her correctly). Is this what the Bible teaches?
A:
No, this isn’t what the Bible teaches. God alone is God, and we are only His creatures. He has always existed; we have not. He is all-powerful and all-knowing; we are not. He is perfect and glorious; we are not. The Bible says, “I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another” (Isaiah 42:8).
It’s true that Adam and Eve were made in God’s likeness, which means they had a soul or spirit and enjoyed perfect fellowship with God. And before they rebelled against God they walked in perfect harmony with Him. But even Adam and Eve weren’t “little gods”; if they had been, they wouldn’t have fallen for Satan’s lie: “You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5).
Ever since then, sin has scarred our souls and separated us from God, and our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven and become reconciled to our Creator. And this is possible, because God loves us, and He sent His Son into the world to die for us. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command” (John 15:13-14).
When we give our lives to Christ, He comes to live within us by His Spirit, and He also adopts us into His family. Think of it: You could become a child of God, beginning today! Open your heart to Christ and experience the joy of being His child forever.
